Playing Saturday night at the Durham Armory

With their little big band lineup of 4 horns, rhythm section, and vocalist, the Mint Julep Jazz Band recreates the hot jazz sounds of the 1920′s, 1930′s, and early 1940′s through arrangements based on original recordings from the jazz age and swing era. The Mint Julep Jazz Band is based out of Durham, NC and is led by trombonist Lucian Cobb and vocalist/swing DJ Laura Windley, who have put their collective knowledge and love of swing music together to create an ideal dance band for swing dancers.

Playing Friday night at the Living Arts Collective

Keenan McKenzie is a talented band leader and composer who is well known for his mind blowing solos on the saxophone and clarinet.  We are lucky to have such a high quality band to kick off the weekend!

In December 2017, Keenan released his first album of original material, entitled Forged in Rhythm. A love letter to the swing dance community, the music has already been DJed around the world and even inspired new choreographed routines! Keenan has also written originals for the Mint Julep Jazz Band, and his jazz ensemble charts have been performed and recorded by collegiate and professional ensembles. These include arrangements of the music of Ryan Kisor, Joel Frahm, Cyrus Chestnut, and Peter Bernstein, all premiered by the artists themselves. Keenan has also served as a transcriber for Heritage Sounds, helping to revive and adapt the repertoire of Chick Webb and Jimmie Lunceford so it can be played live once more.
