Chelsea Reed will kick off the exciting weekend of dance in Durham. Chelsea is a killer swing and blues vocalist who always brings a dynamic and swinging band of Philadelphia-based musicians to be a part of her Fair Weather crew.   Be prepared to laugh, dance, have awesome feels, and bring your comfy shoes because this band will keep the floor full! (Price: Pay-what-you-can with a suggested $15 donation)


Beginner Drop in Lesson- Ellie Biehl and Dominic Hanna

If you are new to swing dancing Ellie and Dominic will teach you what you need to know to have fun on the dance floor all night! Plan to arrive at 6:45 to get through the line and find a place before the class starts. (No experience or partner needed)

Amazing band, amazing dance floor, it is hard to ask for more! Keenan McKenzie and the Riffers perform original music and classics from the 1930s and 1940s. As a Lindy hopper himself, Keenan always delivers a great night of music. Whether you have been dancing a few hours or many years this will be a fantastic night of dancing.

Triple Steps, Swivels, and Special Ingredients- Adam and Abigail

Getting up to speed means mastering basic footwork. This class will focus on drills to improve your swivels and triple steps, options to match the music, and a cavalcade of all the movement options in your 6 and 8 count swing.

This Swingout boot camp gives depth and variety to the moves we know and love…not all swingouts are the same! And that’s ok, because we’re good enough, we’re smart enough, and dog-gone it, we love swingouts.

Swing-Out Directions and Musical Phrasing – Adam and Abigail

A Swing-out is a Swing-out Right? Maybe not? We will focus on what decisions about directional changes in the swing out change about your connection, momentum, and footwork options. Lets practice all this while keeping the music and your partner in mind.

Mix and Match “Jitterbug Contest” Prelims ($10 entry)

There is a long history of competition in swing dancing.  This will continue that tradition with a mix and match competition where partners are assigned by drawing.

Join us at the Unscripted Hotel’s rooftop pool bar.  The bar is open to the public but we will be gathering to socialize and enjoy a cocktail before the main dance. (Event my change location if there is a private event at Unscripted)

Dance in the same hall that Basie and Calloway played back in the 1930s and 40s! We are excited to have a dance at such a storied venue with some of the premiere swing musicians of our time.  Mint Julep Jazz band has performed in Lincoln Center, had their music played on Sesame Street, and performed at swing dance events all over.  Come swing out to Durham’s own “little big band”.

Mix and Match “Jitterbug Contest” finals.

76 years after the “Jitterbug Contest” that was advertised in the Carolina Times we are bringing a competition back to the Durham Armory. On Saturday at the main dance we will have finals for our Jitterbug Competition, a mix and match competition where partners are randomly assigned.

The Fastest Feet in Durham Contest

We are bringing back “The Fastest Feet in Durham” a free to enter, any-swing-goes throw down.  The music gets faster until you can’t keep up and get tapped out.  The reward? Epic bragging rights! (Along with sweet swag!)

Ease into your Sunday with a panel discussion featuring Abigail Browning, Adam Speen, and Michael Brafford.  Come armed with your questions about competing, practicing, teaching, Toxicology, Creative Writing, and Stunt acting. Also enjoy some of the best BBQ the Carolinas have to offer*  ($19 Lunch purchase required to participate)

Jazzin’ up Your Jazz (Solo)-Dee

Do you find yourself jazzing up your jazz when you jazz the jazz to the jazz? We all want our jazz to be the jazziest jazz we can jazz, and this jazz class will bring extension and commitment to jazz to make yours, your jazziest. (If you have purchased lunch at “The Pit” and want to take this class you can come to lunch after the panel discussion)

In the Balboa Peninsula in Southern California, a dance style took hold involving a close ballroom style embrace but with intricate footwork done to popular jazz and swing rhythms. Come learn how the key components of how “Pure Balboa” works and how to seamlessly transition between this fun and versatile partner dance and other well known swing dances.

Balboa Momentum in Lindy Hop- Adam and Abigail

 Lindy Hop is to Balboa as the Swing-out is to the Throw-out. Twist and angular momentum is key to making Bal-Swing fluid and fun. We’ll focus on how to use this type of twist to transform the typical types of movements used in Lindy Hop.

Holeman has been playing for dancers in Durham since 1954 when he moved there as a teenager.  He has played for house parties and in venues as famous as Carnegie Hall and Wolf Trap. Join us for great ribs and a truly special performance.
